How Computer Security Forensics Can Hep Trace Cyber Criminals

Computer security forensics is the newest of all disciplines within the established science of forensics. The development of computer technology has changed virtually every aspect of human life for good, and it has allowed criminals to come with increasingly sophisticated ways of extracting money and resources which are not theirs. There is another side to this complexity, though, and it is that the technology can often make the criminals too smart for their own good. Unless you really understand how computers and their operating systems work, you can play right into the hands of the detectives.

Virtually everyone who has come through the education system in recent years knows how to operate a Windows based computer, but the vast majority of these people only operate within the operating system itself. This includes criminals, who will typically create and delete files in the usual way, believing that when the Recycle Bin is emptied, the files are gone forever. In reality, the data is only deleted when it is overwritten by fresh data, and before then it can still be accessed using the right software.

A trained computer forensics expert can access all parts of a computer hard drive, and can retrieve any data which still remains. The same technique can be used to extract data from hand held devices and cell phones. A cell phone missed calls list, complete with dates and times, can be especially useful in tracking down anyone who may have been an associate of the criminal. It has even been known for a criminal to store the actual names and numbers of associates in a cell phone, and then delete the information thinking it is gone forever.

This basic breach of computer security can cost criminals dearly, but there are criminals themselves who thrive on security breaches. Hacking in to the hosting account of a company can provide easy access to a wealth of data which can be used for criminal purposes. Hacking is often used as a way of sending millions of spam emails without anyone being able to trace the real culprit, but it is sometimes used for even worse ends. Security experts can often determine when a hacking attempt took place, and in many cases there is even a link back to the perpetrator.

It not only hacked hosting accounts that computer security forensics experts have to deal with. Even a simple email account can be used to send millions of spam emails under cover, although most technology has some kind of limit which will kick in to shut the system down. If the spam emails can be identified, there will inevitably be a clue to link back to the perpetrator of the crime. Analyzing the server for evidence of sent mail can be one of the most important aspects of computer security forensics.
